Dentist checking the patient
While we all may understand that we need to visit our dentist every six months, or about twice a year, we may not fully understand just how important this appointment is. You may think to yourself that, since you brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily, you’re fine and don’t need to have these cleaning appointments.

Unfortunately, this is incorrect. Professional dental cleaning helps you remove the plaque missed by brushing and flossing, as well as tartar. Tartar, or calculus, is the term for hardened plaque that has been sitting on teeth for a while. Once tartar forms, it is too hard to remove with a regular toothbrush. Your dentist or dental hygienist will have to use specialized tools to remove it during your cleaning.

Also during your checkup, your dentist can review proper brushing and flossing techniques with you to make sure you’re doing your part to keep your teeth clean.

What’s more, while you’re in the dental chair, you will also be checked for other oral health concerns. You’ll be examined to make sure you don’t have gum disease, oral cancer, or TMD. All of these concerns are easily treatable if they’re caught early on. Early detection is the key and yet another reason why regular teeth cleanings are so important.

Regular professional teeth cleaning is an essential part of good dental health. Thus, it’s of the utmost importance that you visit your dentist twice a month. Taking the time for preventative care now could catch or prevent oral health problems that could plague you in the future.
